The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of New York City is thrilled to present: Make the Leap! How to Take Your Job Search to the Next Level.

This event will be facilitated by YNPN's own Career Counselor, Matthew DiLauri. He is the Managing Director of People and Systems, a national company providing staffing and operational solutions to the nonprofit sector. Mr. DiLauri has more than a decade worth of nonprofit recruitment experience and has managed more than 2,500 nonprofit placements.

May 23rd: Speed Networking Event

May 14th: Exploring Opportunities Abroad
More than sixty people were in attendance for this event. Speakers from YMCA International, Cross Cultural Solutions and AIESEC imparted information about the many opportunities that exist in countries around the world and shared their personal stories of life overseas. This unique event was a chance to learn about opportunities to work, volunteer and intern abroad, regardless of time frame or level of experience. Exploring Opportunities abroad was co-hosted by Baruch College School of Public Affairs.

May 8th: Tales of a Female Nomad: A Conversation with Rita Golden Gelman
YNPN-NYC and the Baruch College School of Public Affairs were thrilled to welcome author and self-described “Female Nomad” Rita Golden Gelman. Gelman read from her book, Tales of a Female Nomad, and shared stories of her experiences as a solo traveler, crisscrossing the globe and residing in communities in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Israel, the Galapagos Islands, Mexico, and Bali. More than sixty people attended this interesting and unique event.

April 23rd: Making Networking Work!
Networking can be the key to advancing your career, but for many people, it is difficult to know what to say and how to make a strong first impression. For the thirty attendees at “Making Networking Work,” the evening was an opportunity to learn how to make strong first impressions and network like a pro. Facilitated by actress, comedienne and nonprofit professional Sheilah Smiley, attendees participated in hands-on exercises that forced them to step outside of their comfort zone and learn how to be effective communicators.

March 9th: YNPN-NYC's 5th Anniversary
YNPN-NYC's 5th Anniversary was celebrated on Friday, March 9 at Libation, where the 2007 Nonprofiteer of the Year award was presented to Caroline Kim Oh, Executive Director of iMentor. YNPN-NYC was joined by over 300 nonprofit professionals from New York City
and was an incredible success.

The Board of YNPN-NYC would like to thank all our members and YNPN Board members from across the country who came to help us celebrate. And a very special thanks to Nancy Lublin, founder of Dress for Success and CEO of Do Something, for sharing her experience and providing encouragement on a lasting career in the nonprofit sector.

We would also like to congratulate Caroline Kim Oh, Executive Director of iMentor, on receiving the 2007 Nonprofiteer of the Year Award.

February 5th: Living Well, Doing Good... on a Nonprofit Salary!
Part workshop, part panel discussion, Living Well, Doing Good provided the more than eighty attendees with a road map for future financial success. Panelists Dana Skallman, Jenifer Gager and Avinash Karnani shared information about saving, investing, debt and money management. This panel discussion and seminar was co-hosted with Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy.

November 29th: Be Bold: Create a Career with Impact
YNPN-NYC held a program in partnership with Echoing Green, the Foundation
Center, and Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) in November 2006
focused on Echoing Green's "Be Bold" publication.  Attendees enjoyed a panel discussion that featured YNPN-NYC's 2006 Nonprofiteer of the Year, Jessica Walker, as one of the panelists.  Attendees also participated in moderated group discussions.  Both the panel discussion and the group discussions shared the theme of being bold in your nonprofit career.

October 19th: October Hangout at TG Whitney's

September 20th: Law/Business Graduate School Panel at the Foundation Center
YNPN-NYC hosted a panel discussion about how law and
business graduate degrees can be applied in the nonprofit sector.  Of the
five panelists, two were MBAs and three had law degrees.  All five panelists
provided insights about the relevance and value of their graduate degrees in
their nonprofit careers.

September 8th: September Hangout

August 16th: Introducing YNPN-NYC's Own Career Counselor: Mr. Matthew DiLauri
The first of YNPN-NYC’s career counseling programs was an outstanding success. The filled-to-capacity session featured Matthew DiLauri. Mr. DiLauri focused on presenting your best self during your job search and focused on such important topics as resume writing and interviewing in the nonprofit sector. Mr. DiLauri, PHR is a staffing specialist at Professionals for Nonprofits.

June 23rd: June HangOut
The June 23rd hangout bought out a crowd to celebrate the beginning of the summer season. Held at Mica Bar 51, the hangout gave YNPNers the opportunity to relax on a Friday evening and have a fun time chatting with their fellow non-profit peers. YNPN regularly holds hangouts throughout the city so we hope to see you at an upcoming one.

May 18th: May HangOut

The latest YNPN-NYC Hangout allowed nonprofit professionals a chance to get together. The group met on May 18th at Croxley Ales to discuss the latest news of the nonprofit sector as well as to enjoy a little time out of the office. The YNPN-NYC regularly hosts Hangouts at spots all over Manhattan, so be sure to check an upcoming one out!

May 24th: YNPN hosts Goal Setting Workshops

Veteran trainer, professional growth coach and author, Marquesa Pettway, led the May 24 and 25 workshop, Six “R” Success Goal Setting Workshop for Nonprofit Professionals The interactive classroom-style workshop took workshop participants through the Six “R” Success Formula, a detailed inspirational process which professional goals to be visualized clearly, and then breaks these goals down into smaller, more easily attainable steps in order to overcome barriers that could halt progress. While the focus of the workshop was on professional goals, this formula could be applied to any area of life.


April 28th: April HangOut
YNPN-NYC’s April 28th Hangout didn’t just provide a chance for hard-working non-profits professionals to have a little fun--it also provided a chance to speak with the YNPN-NYC Advisory Board to learn more about the organization and about volunteer opportunities. Thanks to everyone who came out the Gstaad to hang out with your fellow YNPNers!


April 6: Brian O'Connell Event
People Power - Service, Advocacy, Empowerment: At this joint event with NYRAG and SARANO, attendees enjoyed an intimate and interactive discussion with Brian O'Connell as he shared his experiences, answered questions and gave insightful advice.

March 29th: YNPN-NYC Fourth Anniversary Celebration
More than 150 attendees gathered to celebrate YNPN-NYC's Fourth Anniversary at Social Bar & Lounge. Guest speakers Ami Dar from Idealist, Charles Best from DonorsChoose and William Upski Wimsatt from League of Young Voters Education Fund were on hand to share their experiences and provide insight into how young nonprofit professionals can continue to grow and succeed in the sector.

The second annual Nonprofiteer of the Year award was also presented to Jessica Walker in recognition for the significant contributions she's made to the nonprofit sector in the New York City area. Read more about Jessica's contributions and read Jessica's Spotlight interview.

January 17: Powerful Presentation Skills Workshop
We had a full house for our Power Presentation Skills workshop on January 17th. Many thanks to Marquesa Pettway, Speaker, Trainer and Author, who led the workshop and offered participants many take away skills from tips on how to create a presentation to how to tailor your presentation, dress and speech to your audience. November 11, 2005: YNPN Hang Out: Dinner & Tea, High Chai
High Chai offered some YNPNers a great opportunity to get to know one while enjoying some tea and tea inspired dishes. Members were enthusiastic about meeting one another, taking it upon themselves to swap seats (when they weren't too busy enjoying the delicious food) throughout the evening.

October 18: Joint event with the I.N.M., Columbia Graduate School of Business
Thanks to those of you who came out October 18th for the New Leadership in an Age of Uncertainty, an event co-hosted by YNPN-NYC with the Institute for Not-for-Profit Management, Columbia Graduate School of Business.  Our speaker, Grant Ackerman, the Associate Dean of Executive Education at the Columbia business School discussed the topic of leadership and management in the contemporary context including the challenges of leading successful organizations in complex and volatile times.

September 29: YNPN Hang Out
We had a great turnout at our September 29th Hangout at the Belmont Lounge.   We look forward to seeing you again at the next one!

June 23: Nonprofit Hangout at Matador Bistro
We celebrated the change of season at Matador Bistro in the West Village.  Thanks to all of you who made it out, it was a great opportunity for us to meet and get to know you.   

May 25: So You Wanna Go To Grad School: Choosing the Right Health Degree Program for You
As the second event in our “So You Wanna Go to Grad School” programs, YNPN-NYC organized an alumni panel on advanced degrees in public health that was directed towards individuals in the nonprofit sector who are interested in graduate programs but are unclear about the benefits of doing so. Speakers included young, successful alumni from various public health graduate programs at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, NYU's Steinhart School of Education, Milano Graduate School at the New School University, and Hunter College. Many thanks go to The Foundation Center, which generously offered its space to us for this event. 

April 1: Dim Sum Dinner with YNPN-NYC
Several YNPNers gathered at DimSumGoGo for networking games and opportunities to connect over dim sum, a meal including a variety of small Chinese dishes. YNPN-NYC members got to know one another, discussed their careers and offered worthwhile advice to each other (when their mouths weren’t full of tasty treats like turnip cakes and black tea). Stay tuned for more YNPN-NYC social events. 

March 30: YNPN-NYC celebrates 3rd Anniversary
Over the past three years, YNPN-NYC has successfully grown from a group of eight young nonprofit professionals into a force of more than 1,000, attracting New Yorkers—from Inwood to Wall Street to the farthest reaches of the outer-boroughs; from small community-based organizations to internationally recognized nonprofits. In recognition of its achievements, and to celebrate young nonprofit leaders in the New York City area, YNPN-NYC marked its third anniversary at Black Door on March 30 with over 50 YNPNers in attendance. The celebration also marked the debut of YNPN-NYC’s Nonprofiteer of the Year Award, presented to Maija Neville, MPH, Director of Health Education at Settlement Health.  This award was created to recognize an outstanding young professional whose achievements made significant contributions to their organization and the nonprofit sector as a whole. 

February 23: Networking Your Way to Your Next Job
Matthew Dilauri from Professionals for Nonprofits presented on how to get the skills you need to get ahead in the nonprofit sector. Program points included topics such as: What is networking; how do I network; how do I grow my network; how do I track my network? This dynamic presentation was well attended by over 35 YNPNers, with a question and answer session afterwards. Many thanks to the Support Center for Nonprofit Management for generously offering their space for this event. 

February 9: So You Wanna Go to Grad School in Public Policy?
Based on survey results from our members, YNPN-NYC organized an alumni panel on advanced degrees in public policy that was directed towards individuals in the nonprofit sector who are interested in graduate programs but are unclear about the benefits. Speakers included young, successful Alumni from various public affairs and administration programs at The New School University’s Milano Graduate School, New York University’s Wagner School of Public Affairs, and Baruch College (CUNY) School of Public Affairs. Many thanks to The Foundation Center, which generously offered its space to us for this event.
